One of the things that you have to do when you're making a house your own is to tear out some of the stuff the guy before you did (Sorry Ken – I'll buy you a beer!)
We've spent the last week gutting the Pole Barn. I've taken out both of the overhead storage compartments that were in there and I'll be removing the wood stove that Ken had in there too.
There's a twenty foot tall chimney that runs up from the wood stove and straight out the roof. I'm really not sure how he got it in there and I'm a little afraid of pulling it out. We may just hit it with a hammer a bunch of times and hope for the best. I'm planning on throwing insulation at the hole that's 20' in the air and hoping for the best there too. Or not.
We're planning on putting some meeting rooms, my workshop and exercise and a bathroom out there (I mentioned this before) and I'm really hoping to do In Floor Heating. I've found a website that'll sell me everything I need to do it. I just lay the Pex Pipe before the concrete guy does his thing and Viola – in floor heating!
I managed to injure myself a couple of times while deconstructing the inside of the Pole Barn. I was tearing down a joist from an upright post and as I did I said to Sherry "watch yourself, when this lets go it'll swing down!" and I put the crowbar in and pushed and did it ever swing down FAST! WAY faster than I was expecting and I was still standing under it when it reached my forehead level.
Boing!
The silly little joist actually Bounced off my forehead.
Sherry did a really good job of not laughing and expressing the appropriate amount of concern for my noggin (which by the way is how I make all of our money… to pay the mortgage… on our dream home… it would be bad to damage the noggin).
The Goose Egg lasted about three days – I milked that sucker for as much sympathy as I could get!
The other injury was to my mousing hand. I managed to smack it up pretty badly when I pressed on to finish the job after I was officially exhausted. I got sloppy and forgot how hard wood and steel are – especially when you're swinging the steel toward the wood. Ouch.
It hurt the whole next day while I was mousing around my desktop :(
I guess you really do have to break a sweat to ensure that we have a place that is Bound To Please.
