The things you learn

by Darren 30. September 2010 06:33

Fall is beautiful here in Wine Country.

We woke up to a beautiful foggy morning – the mist hovering over the ground just a few feet away. It was really nice to see the fog over the corn field in our backyard too.

The lack of backyard neighbors will mean that you'll have a very secluded and tranquil stay here – even before the hot tub is installed.

We have a couple of fire pits and a side yard big enough for an entire lawn bowling tournament! Perhaps you would enjoy a quick round of croquette with sweetheart before enjoying a glass of wine by the fire (or on the deck – your choice).

In construction news we have the coil for the Central Boiler stove installed in our plenum now (I actually didn't even know that we had a plenum before we started this project – you may want to check your basement and see if you have one too – chances are you do and don't know).

We also have flooring for the Pole Barn. (Well… we've ordered flooring – we want it all to be the same colour lot so they're bringing more in for us – I guess that's one of the problems when you have so much space to put flooring on…)

Beautiful mornings like this morning and an evening glass of lightly chilled wine will make sure that our place is Bound To Please!

Old dogs and new tricks

by Darren 27. September 2010 16:32

This ride has been incredible.

I've learned a lot about old houses, old habits and old dogs.

Old houses are built to last. Old habits die hard and old dogs shouldn't be digging 300' ditches without stretching their backs and taking frequent breaks.

Now that the Thermo-Pex is in the ground we turn our attention to the Pole Barn. We have heating tubes (more pex!) run under the concrete and we have some wall segments up. Today will be all about getting the structure weatherproof.

Ken cut a hole in the roof (for the wood furnace we removed) and now I need to be able to cover that up – fortunately I have a 20' ladder (something that every man should own at least once in his life!) to help me get a patch up there.

There's a company in town that sells the steel sheets that these Pole Barns are made from – hopefully we'll be able to get some pieces from them to fix the holes that Ken and I made.

I'll let you know how it goes and you can be sure that this old dog is planning to stretch everything before he climbs 20' straight up!

I love lazy Sundays

by Darren 26. September 2010 09:58

It's nice waking up on a Sunday and having nothing to do but lounge around until Church starts. It's nice knowing that there's a bowl of spaghetti sauce ready to go in the fridge and right after church one of your friends and their family will be joining you for a leisurely meal. It's nice knowing that today will be easy and a relaxing way to end your week.

Today is not one of those days for me.

I've kissed Sherry goodbye for her work day and I'm writing my blog entry to let you guys know that we've already spent an hour and a half installing Thermo-Pex for the Central Boiler stove that we're installing (I'll be finishing after church today). That'll mean that we'll have a very toasty house for you to visit on those brisk fall days. You'll be warm and cozy here after a beautiful day at the Apple Festival, or having toured the wineries right after their harvest. The house will be warm and the wine will be chilled and the conversation will be entertaining – a perfect way to celebrate you!

We are settling in at our new church and tonight will be our first kinship meeting and hopefully we'll start having friends over after church again.

But today is a day to create an atmosphere that is Bound to Please!
